The Winslow Boy is a first-class film. A few emotionally tense scenes, including parents arguing in front of teen.With no evidence to support the teen's claim to innocence besides his word, the family sacrifices significant time, effort, and money to uphold his honor. Enjoyed it but not as impressive as the original Robert Donat version with the exception of Nigel Hawthorne who gave an exceptional potrayal of the father, mainly because of the original cinematic techniques compared with the clipped televisual techniques that does not present a more seamless version. It's true to the Rattigan original without being "stagy ... so is everyone else - well acted throughout. In my opinion this is much better than previous attempts to put it on. When his 14-year-old son is expelled from the Royal Naval College for stealing, bank manager Arthur Winslow launches a long and costly effort to clear the boy's name. This is a very intelligent film. Absolutely stellar cast, with Mamet's wife, R Pidgeon, a refreshing surprise. To save the honour of the boy and his family, the pre-eminent barrister of the day is engaged to take on the might the Admiralty.

The characters are interesting and though caricatured still believable. The screenplay was adapted by Mamet based on Terence Rattigan's 1946 dramatic play The Winslow Boy. It is a period drama so one would have to be enamoured or at least receptive to that genre. Jeremy Northam is excellent in this.

Some interesting insights into the production - for example, a Hitchcockian trick for the letter from Sir Robert was used. And the actors are magnificient in their roles. A bit different from the original film -- more focused on peripheral issues, women's suffrage, romantic relationships for example -- which a little moves the focus from let right be done. It all rings so true I found myself being swept into the times portrayed in the film. I originally chose to watch this DVD because I am interested in the Edwardian period. A must have for all the family.

For me, that is a rare pleasure and it is a rare film that can perform that trick. The Winslow Boy is a 1999 period drama film directed by David Mamet and starring Nigel Hawthorne, Rebecca Pidgeon, Jeremy Northam and Gemma Jones. The main characters are engaging without being made to conform to mass cultural stereotypes, and the period setting is convincing without taking centre stage. However, you get a lot more than a snapshot of the early 1900s. Deeply satisfying. But in the process, the determined Arthur may destroy his family.

The plot moves along swiftly, the actors are appealing. would recommend watching it Nothing that would offend parents for viewing by children. Adjectives are not sufficient to convey my admiration for every aspect of this film.

Absolutely great movie; even better than the earlier Sir Cedric Hardwick version.
