I've been watching the show Mr. InBetween, which is based on this movie, when I came across this movie. It also has common sense woven in with tragedy, comedy and vindication. We checked it out because of the TV show “Mr. Hemmed in by a dazzling series of successful movies (Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, Winter Light), the Magician came and went in 1958 without much acclaim from moviegoers or critics. Video availability outside of United States varies. It is a gift for a friend of mine. The opening is depressing enough and I almost turned it off but was soon drawn in by the quality of story telling, acting and film making. i know, however, that it is a damn good movie. I realized then how he loved story telling and film making of course far beyond being 'Bergman' whom I prejudged as being out of reach and out of touch with his audience only because of his persona.
I doubt whether you will have seen anything like this but I am really pleased it exists. A friend reccomended this film to me as id liked chopper and he said it was my type of film, turns out he was right!
