Fengyi Zhan simply has far less of a cruel, regal presence in the role than does Wen Jiang, and there is nothing like the overpowering relationship between the Emperor-to-be and his 'soulmate' - be it assassin or musician - that exists in the earlier work holding the long narrative together. 2 out of 3 found this helpful.

This 3 hour epic (seems much shorter) explores the will to power and conquest and the conflicting motives that underlie that quest by tracking two parallel lives: the emperor Q'in, whose desire to unify the Chinese feudal states has its basis in noble aims but devolves into violent oppression, isolation, and ultimate powerlessness; and the assassin Jing ke, a mercenary killer who comes to recognize the unintended consequences of murder and finds a form of salvation. 1 out of 1 found this helpful. Assassin Jingke was considered a biggest hero in the history for his great sacrifice spirit and the brave suicide assassination, although his action was failed. His love (or maybe just affection) for a woman and pity for several hundred children whom Zheng had buried alive (not even two thousand years of hostile Confucian historians claimed Qin Shi Huang did this, although there is a legend about him burying 460 Confucians up to their necks and then beheading them)is enough to make this former assassin kill again. But whereas Emperor's Shadow gives the whole process an obsessive gravitas, despite Kaige Chen's best efforts (and he manages some beautiful looking compositions) the present production is more diffuse and, to me anyway, was on a different level. If you've never seen a three-hour Chinese epic, this wouldn't be a bad place to start. 4 out of 4 found this helpful. Select your address

Qin Shi Huang is for the Chinese rather what Milton's Satan is for us: accepted as a villain, but a noble one. But, it opened in limited release, and hardly anyone ended up watching it. This movie is so well done and an amazing true story. Yin Zheng (Xuejian Li) is the ruler of one region of China, who seeks to do what no man has been able to do before, unify China.

Gong Li is spot on.

Was this review helpful? I highly recommend seeing The Emperor and the Assassin, especially on the big screen. The history of Emperor Chin, the unifier and founder of China is amazing. 4 out of 5 found this helpful. THE EMPEROR AND THE ASSASSIN is a Chinese production that tells the story of how the first Emperor of China brutally unified the country in 221 B.C. Leaving aside the drawbacks and deficiencies of the film mentioned by other viewers I must say that it seemed to me a film about power, which is in my opinion one of the most luring illusions. This is the type of Chinese movie we want. Actress Gong Li is brilliant as the beautiful woman who is caught in the middle of the action between the kingdoms (states) of Zhao and Qin, and Zhan, but uses logic, manipulation, and cunning to survive it all. | Rating: 4/5 Was this review helpful? |

The costumes and set puts any history lover right into the thick of ancient China.

also it's almost 3 hours long but it's a complicated story! December 6, 2005 Review By: Fusion3600 | January 28th, 2012 Plot: What’s it about? The acting was terrible and the story was difficult to follow. Is the idea of a powerful would-be empire worth reducing to misery and killing thousands of its citizens now?

When music and the cosmos collide. Lots of bodies. He seems to half hate his subjects for having to renounce his father and his love, half love the people as a good emperor should. The Assassin is wonderful, scary, and heart-warming all-at-once!
