It relates the story of Cytherea, a maid to the eccentric arch-intriguer Miss Aldclyffe, and the man she loves, Edward Springrove. so i've decided to read him. sure, why not?This is Hardy's first novel and I have to say in places it really shows. Which was why, as a new reader of his work, I opened Desperate Remedies with some trepidation. The novel combines two genres of popular Victorian sensation fiction: the Gothic romance and detective fiction.

I'm partial to these lesser known works and this did not disappoint.
