Great performances in a unique setting. Another fine DVD added to my collection. The acting of these 2 has seldom if ever been better (that's just my opinion of course! Two very different characters connect in very special circumstances but no conventional happy ending. Marine poster boy Mitchum washes up on a desolate Pacific Island. If John Huston went to deepest Africa to make a film as an excuse to shoot elephants, then he came out with a damn fine film in "The African Queen".

Loved this gem which I discovered by accident and the combination of Robert Mitchum and Deborah Kerr made for a memorable film , set on a remote island in the Pacific and also used by the Japanese in WW2 adds a sense of drama to it. The bravery and chivalry shown by "Corporal Allison" is a fine testimony to men of strong character. I have had this on my wish list for some time and am very glad that got around to order it. Marine and Nun on isolated island in Pacific WWII. And, "Sister Angela" is a brave and compassionate woman. The hard and the soft, the pure and the experienced one, their view of the world how it is and how it could be for both of them if the situation they find themselves in does not change drastically. Americans start bombardment just before Japanese are about to find our Stars. I found it very touching to observe how a man as incredibly masculine as Robert Mitchum portrayed his character of Mr. Allison with such sweetness, sensitivity and gentleness towards Deborah Kerr's lovely nun. She wakes to find herself back in the cave sans clothes under a blanket. The interaction between the soldier and the nun, young and still unaware of the world as it really is, is really fantastic.

Mitchum can't apologize enough and explains he had to get her out of clothes cause she's been very sick. Robert Mitchum, Deborah Kerr

Makes the whole far-fetched premise work. There is something about the premise of washing up on the shore of a Pacific Island and having to survive with what you find which always intrigues me. Oh oh!

What more could we expect from the teaming of Mitchum/Kerr/Huston...Nothing! Recomended Most of the film is just Mitchum and Kerr talking but it holds your interest. Please try againSorry, we failed to record your vote. Mitchum an army marine and Kerr a nun sets the scene for an unusual combination and will to survive amidst the threat of discovery by the Japanese is the theme of the story, interesting and a product of it's time with great acting and storylines.
