Ambler wrote several similar novels during this period and this piqued my interest to check them out.Eric Ambler began his writing career in the early 1930s, and quickly established a reputation as a thriller writer of extraordinary depth and originality. Bearing in mind that this was published in 1939, it has a very modern feel to it. Ambler is becoming a favourite of mine. He’s engaged to be married and the employment market is pretty slim in Britain in 1937. Everyone in this book had flaws and that's good because that's more realistic and easier to relate to. I liked most of the characters except for Richard - narcissistic idiot and "Stalker" Julianna - I liked her much better towards the end of the book and I felt for her. Not for nothing do Graham Greene and John Le Carre point to Ambler as the Godfather of modern suspense thrillers. If you enjoy nonstop thrillers, this is definitely the book for you! It was an engaging read, yeti can't help but feel that it was lacking something, and not something I can necessarily put my finger on. I've read a few of Erica Spindler's books but this one was my probably my favorite, it kind of reminds me of the movies I enjoy watching that has me on the edge of my seat while munching on popcorn and chips. The plotting is tight, the pace brisk, the dialog sharp, and the description of characters and settings economical yet vivid. Soon after he arrives, however, he learns the sinisterNicky Marlow needs a job. CAUSE FOR ALARM is so well written, you feel like going outside and looking down the street to make sure that this story is not happening to one of your neighbors! Each one of the characters is vivid and real, and even when something seems "coincidental" it quickly falls neatly into place. May suffer from a lack of violence and gunfire for modern tastes, but the tension is maintained efficiently - being stuck between Fascism and Communism - and Ambler is notable as the bridge that connects the gung-ho patriotism of John Buchan to the world weary Cold War tradecraft of John LeCarre. By getting involved with the Ryans’ lives, Julianna drags them into her conflict with the ‘man of unspeakable evil’, putting all their lives in danger… Exciting plot!
