Riding across one of the most deceptively hook-laden melodies ever conceived – an almost-but-not-precise adaptation of JS Bach’s Minuet from the Anna Magdalena Notebook; piped in on one of the most seductively not-quite-tuneful vocals ever voiced, ”A Lover’s Concerto” marks the apogee of the Girl Group sound, at the same time as it dealt the movement its death blow.

2 It is also part of the soundtrack. By late 1965, after all, the American music scene was awash in either the latest lurches of the British Invasion, or the first glimmerings of folk-rock’s switch into psychedelic whimsy. There was precious little room anywhere for such past simplicities as teenaged love.

"A Lover's Concerto" is a pop song written by American songwriters, Sandy Linzer and Denny Randell, and recorded in 1965 by The Toys. And, defying the prophecies of doom that had indeed already devoured the best-known practitioners of the Girl Group sound, ”Lovers Concerto” turned out to be one of the biggest hits of 1965, even if it couldn’t quite top the chart.

Various Artists The song’s construction itself resists easy categorisation – once past the brief intro, verse and chorus are so cunningly blended that neither stands apart from the other (REM would execute a similar trick with ”Losing My Religion”), to transform a simple song into a virtual symphony.
