(I wonder when we will get the chance to see him in 1965's ""Mister Moses" starring Robert Mitchum?) With 'The Offence', Hopkins took this philosophy to the limit and created a stunning portrayal of latent evil emerging from the wrecked personality of a good man.

Outstanding, amazing, deep performance by Connery that demonstrates his ability to reach into the soul of the character he is playing. All rights reserved. Cinemark Fascinating, nevertheless, with outstanding performances from Connery and (especially) Bannen. In addition to its curiosity value as a small film without which a much bigger picture might never have been made, The Offence is a superb movie in its own right and deserves to be better known. He is utterly convincing as Sergeant Johnson the macho, hard-man, Detective , who is on the verge of a nervous breakdown as a result of his 20-odd years of digging amongst the dregs of humanity. That film was designed to be ambiguous, almost like a Chinese puzzle, but with "The Offence" we really do not have a protagonist as the film tries to give creditability by their very humaness, despicable traits so and the ambiguity never clarifies our doubts. The Offence also bears interesting comparison with another film of 1972, coincidentally also made in England by an American and adapted from a stage play, Joseph L. Mankiewicz's Sleuth. On some levels it is dated, but the power of Connery's truly extraordinary performance is undiminished. THE OFFENCE is a tight, taut, gripping drama of psychological suspense that showcases what may be Sean Connery's finest performance. Connery is excellent here and produces some of his best work. Lumet's direction strives to give to material that is neither edifying nor suspenseful a fake profundity, stretching it to unconscionable lengths. Harrison Birtwhistle's sophisticated musical score supports the characters and scenes perfectly.

Very dark thriller, Lumet at his best, A must for Sean Connery fans Therein lie the answers. In that time, the number murders, rapes, and other felony crimes he's investigated has left a terrible mark on his psyche. Brilliant film....Connery excelling himself. This unrelentingly somber policier inaugurates a newfound force in Lumet's work. The acting is, however, top class with Connery, Trevor Howard (as the police superior investigating Connery's behaviour) and Ian Bannen (as the target of Connery's obsession) being outstanding.

Sean Connery is more a superstar than an actor. Sidney Lumet made many films on many wide-ranging subjects, but always kept returning to crime, law enforcement, and the justice system for his strongest, best-wrought films. That includes the very misunderstood "The Appointment" with Omar Sharif and Anouk Aimee. Although he is on familiar ground - cops under intolerable pressure - the dream-like cinematic textures achieved here are reminiscent (though not imitative) of Welles and Tarkovsky. If you thought Sean Connery was little more than matinee idol, watch this movie and you'll think again.

In spite of its poor production values and low budget, this is a wonderful showcase for Sean Connery's dramatic talents.
