He is utterly convincing as Sergeant Johnson the macho, hard-man, Detective , who is on the verge of a nervous breakdown as a result of his 20-odd years of digging amongst the dregs of humanity. That film was designed to be ambiguous, almost like a Chinese puzzle, but with "The Offence" we really do not have a protagonist as the film tries to give creditability by their very humaness, despicable traits so and the ambiguity never clarifies our doubts. The Offence also bears interesting comparison with another film of 1972, coincidentally also made in England by an American and adapted from a stage play, Joseph L. Mankiewicz's Sleuth. On some levels it is dated, but the power of Connery's truly extraordinary performance is undiminished. Very dark thriller, Lumet at his best, A must for Sean Connery fans Therein lie the answers. In that time, the number murders, rapes, and other felony crimes he's investigated has left a terrible mark on his psyche. Brilliant film....Connery excelling himself. This unrelentingly somber policier inaugurates a newfound force in Lumet's work. The acting is, however, top class with Connery, Trevor Howard (as the police superior investigating Connery's behaviour) and Ian Bannen (as the target of Connery's obsession) being outstanding.

Sidney Lumet made many films on many wide-ranging subjects, but always kept returning to crime, law enforcement, and the justice system for his strongest, best-wrought films.
