Their mission is to educate—through scholarship, teaching, and service—faithful and creative leaders for the church’s ministries in the world. She hopes to find even more ways to support and show compassion to this marginalized group, many of whom are Muslim. On any given Sunday, you’ll find Candler faculty across the city of Atlanta in local parishes as leaders in their congregations, Sunday School teachers, part-time pastors, or simply as members immersed in Christian community. The knowledge they gain in the classroom then resonates in their fieldwork placements in church, social service and clinical settings. Curriculum-wise, Candler added a concentration in Criminal Justice Ministries in 2016. “Darrin is a model for pastoral care,” says his supervisor. He majored in political science and history, served as a congressional intern, and taught middle school with Teach for America before enrolling at Candler in 2016. “I think it’s critical that through this work, I show members of refugee communities that there are people who are glad they’re here.” All Candler scholarships are awarded based on merit to those whose life experiences, service to others, and vocational expressions support the school’s mission: to educate faithful and creative leaders for the church’s ministries throughout the world. That context shaped her understanding of what the church is and what the church should do, she says. Individuals interested in any of Candler’s dual-degree programs must complete a separate application for the non-Candler degree program with the corresponding school. This offers students a learning lab for welcoming and working with refugees, which they do largely through Contextual Education placements at either Congregational Ministries with Refugees or the Refugee Services division of Lutheran Services of Georgia. Students benefit from unique academic offerings while learning from some of the best minds in theological education—and as a part of Emory University, they have access to libraries, research facilities, and events and lectures in a community known for its outstanding scholars and experts. Other seminaries in the Atlanta Theological Association now participate with Candler in the Certificate program, which provides theological education to around 40 inmates in a given year. Just a few miles from Candler lies Clarkston, Ga., a town that welcomes 1,500 refugees per year and half the population is foreign born. Candler students often teach in the Certificate program. That work reached an international audience in 2015 with the remarkable efforts of the #kellyonmymind campaign to save Lee Arrendale inmate and Certificate program graduate Kelly Gissendaner from execution. Because of Atlanta’s role as a global transportation hub, there is no shortage of opportunities to engage in ministry with immigrants and refugees in extra-curricular life as well: hundreds of metro area churches in many denominations have language classes and resettlement services as part of their ministry offerings. When we asked our students what they love most about studying at Candler they unwaveringly agreed that it was the faculty.In fact, most students agree that the quality of our faculty was one of the two most important factors in their decision to attend Candler, alongside the school's academic reputation. Additionally, Candler professor Liz Bounds and alumna Susan Bishop founded an educational program at Lee Arrendale State Prison that offers a one- or two-year Certificate in Theological Studies. We are closely monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic while planning for fall semester. On other days, they’re leading conferences and workshops, delivering lectures, conducting Bible studies, and writing denominational position papers and doctrinal statements to expand knowledge of theology and religion, deepen spiritual life, and strengthen the public witness of the church.
