There was no reason for Nesto to be so convinced this guy and that missed meeting was his ONE AND ONLY chance for success. I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. She loves writing stories about people who look and sound like her people, getting unapologetic happy endings.“I’m a big fan. A troubled Vietnam war vet deserts his wife and child shortly after he returns from the war. His family and friends are a big part of the story, warm and opinionated and vibrant, giving him a community he didn't lose with the move. [racism and xenophobia (this is countered), religious homophobia (including a scene where a pastor tries to make the gay character “repent”), family cutting ties due to religious homophobia, cancer/death of a family member, grief, use of the word “spaz” (this may only have been in the ARC; the author is aware it is ableist language and it was flagged to be removed during final revisions) [racism and xenophobia (this is countered), religious homophobia (including a scene where a pastor tries to make the gay character “repent”), family cutting ties due to religious homophobia, cancer/death of a family member, grief, use of the word “spaz” (this may only have been in the ARC; the author is aware it is ableist language and it was flagged to be removed during final revisions) I love a good N/A romance read, but weirdly enough I don’t get many review requests for that genre! Herrera NAILED what so many writers try and fail to do - build a deep and satisfying love story within the context of our complex and difficult racially charged country. The story has a great sense of culture, one that takes you a long for a ride as well as teaches you something special; what it isI loved this book. Everything from Chevy Blazers, Camaros, El Caminos, Ford Mustangs, Broncos, Thunderbirds to Corvettes and Cadillacs. This is a great debut novel. He returns after 10 years, where he's been living like an animal in the forest.
